Glenn Beck's empty SUV crashes in Finger Lakes

LODI, NY — Radio talk show host Glenn Beck’s family had a close call when their sport utility vehicle rolled down a steep hill in New York’s Finger Lakes region just after they had exited the SUV.
In an account of the mishap posted on Beck’s website, TheBlaze.com, he says he was hugging his newly married daughter as his wife got their young son out of the vehicle. They had just arrived at the cottage rented for the daughter’s wedding reception last weekend in Lodi on Seneca Lake. Beck says the SUV slid down the hill and overturned, coming to rest near the shoreline.
Photos on the website show the SUV with broken windows and damage to its passenger side.
The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office says the accident wasn’t reported to police in the county.

The rush to stockpile Twinkies and Ho-Hos the past week may have been premature, according toABC News.  Hostess will appear in bankruptcy court today to settle the sale of assets in their liquidation, brought on by a failure to reach a settlement with the bakers’ union.  However, Hostess CEO Gregory Rayburn says that they have already received offers to buy the brands — including a very promising offer from a Mexican group that may have a better economic model than can be found in the US:

“I think we’ll find buyers,”  CEO Gregory F. Rayburn told ABC News on Sunday.  ”A few have surfaced already since Friday expressing interest in the brand to acquire them.”Con Agra and Flowers Foods are among the companies that have expressed interest in Hostess, but Mexican company El Grupo Bimbo may have an edge, the Christian Science Monitor reported Saturday.  Grupo Bimbo, headed by Mexican billionaire Daniel Servitje Montull, is the largest bread-baking company in the world.Economists say part of the reason Hostess struggled was due to high sugar tariffs meant to protect local producers, the Monitor reported.  Grupo Bimbo could take advantage of lower sugar prices in Mexico.More

A Brief, Illustrated History of the Public Sector Unions That, Together With The Democrat Party, Are Waging War on the Taxpayer

Throughout American history -- and as recently as the 1950s -- there were no unions for government workers. Public-sector employees were expected to earn a bit less than their private-sector equivalents. The reasons they did so included an interest in public service, job security and reasonable benefits.

But that changed in the late fifties with New York City Mayor Robert Wagner's cynical appeal to the votes of city workers. He signed an executive order authorizing them to unionize, and soon other local and state Democrat legislators around the country followed his lead.

These efforts culminated in 1962, when President John F. Kennedy granted federal employees the right to collectively bargain. Since then, public sector union membership has skyrocketed while, in the private sector, unions have fallen out of favor.

In 2009, private sector union members were outnumbered for the first time by their public sector counterparts.

The historical basis of unions revolved around workers receiving a reasonable share of a company's profits. But that tenet is nonsensical when applied to public service. Governments don't make profits; they simply assess taxes.

The aims of public sector unions conflict directly with the interests of taxpayers.

And because it has been exceedingly hard to fight public sector unions, the salaries and benefits of public employees have skyrocketed in recent years. Since the election of Barack Obama, the number of federal employees making over $150,000 a year has more than doubled to over 10,000.

In 2009 government salaries jumped 2.4%, approximately twice the increase earned by private sector employees. In fact, the average salary of a federal worker is now $71,000, about $22,000 more than the average private sector employee.

Crawford Reflection

Crawford's writing gives a first hand account of some of the war in Iraq. Considering himself an "Accidental soldier," he simply joined the national guard in order to get his tuition at college paid for. He had no idea that he would end up in Iraq, but did not question his duties when he was ordered to go there.

Crawford uses a few detailed experiences to represent the life of a soldier in Iraq. The experience of shooting the unarmed civilian was particularly shocking, especially when he nonchalantly states that he was unsure whether he realized before or after he shot him that the "enemy's" gun was broken. Probably the most interesting aspect of his writing, however, is not necessarily the text, but the style. There is a point in his writing when he simply tells an elaborate lie, something that did not really happen. Undoubtedly, this touches on the theme of what is true and not true. For the life a soldier, Crawford's writing seems to insinuate that the difference can become easily blurred.

As far as his claims of being an accidental soldier are concerned, I personally don't buy into it. Yes, he might not have predicted that he would end up in Iraq, as no one can truly predict when wars are going to break out. But, anytime someone signs up for the armed forces, they need to be aware of the potential duties and tasks that go along with that type of commitment. Just because he does not agree with his purpose in Iraq or expect to be there, it does not mean he is an accidental soldier. Instead, I would define him as an instrumental soldier, as his reasons for fighting are outside the realm of war. However, overall, I found Crawford's writing entertaining and intriguing. It was nice to read a war story that kept its reader on the edge.
